FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an effective form of health care that has evolved into a complete and holistic medical system. Practitioners of acupuncture and Chinese medicine have used this noninvasive medical system to diagnose and help millions of people get well, relieve pain and maintain an optimal state of health.

An acupuncturist will place fine, sterile needles at specific acupoints along the body. This signals the body to promote natural healing by enhancing recuperative power, immunity, and physical and emotional health. It also can improve overall function and well-being. It is a safe, painless, and effective way to treat a wide variety of medical conditions.

Q: What are the education and clinical training required to become a Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine?

Doctors of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine must complete four years of extensive and comprehensive graduate training at nationally certified schools. This includes 2,050 educational hours as well as 950 clinical hours. All acupuncturists must pass a national exam, Clean Needle Technique Certification, and meet strict guidelines to practice in each state.

Q: Does acupuncture hurt?

When you think of needles, what comes to mind? Probably not the most pleasant thought. Rest assured that acupuncture needles are unlike the hypodermic needles used to inject fluid or draw blood. Acupuncture needles are about 10 times smaller in size – approximately the size of a cat’s whisker and very flexible. Talk to your acupuncturist about your fears and he or she will listen to your concerns and work with you to be as gentle and caring as possible. Opening up a discussion about your fears can help minimize the anticipation.

What does acupuncture feel like?

The most common sensation is a dull, heavy, or achy sensation around where the needle was placed. This can occur immediately once the needle is inserted, or develop more strongly over the time that you are resting. Other sensations can include warmth, tingling, or an electric sensation. These can also be immediately or develop throughout the treatment. Some points also may be way more intense or sensitive than others that you may not feel at all. You do not want to feel anything that is sharp or stabbing. If that is ever the case, let your acupuncturist know and they can adjust or remove the needle that is causing discomfort.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments will vary from person to person. A typical treatment plan starts with weekly or twice weekly treatments for 12 weeks before reassessment. Treatment frequency depends on a variety of factors: your constitution, the severity of the condition, and the length of time which you have been experiencing discomfort. Some people experience immediate relief; others may take months or even years to achieve results. Chronic conditions usually take longer to resolve than acute ones. Plan on a minimum of one month to see significant changes.

Do you accept insurance?

We are a cash-based practice and are not in network with any insurance providers. We do, however, accept HSA/FSA payments and are able to provide Superbills for reimbursement for individuals whose insurance policies accept them.
